Tryout Policies and Procedures

Player Eligibility

All players who wish to participate in the tryout process must live within the Rogers High School boundaries or have an approved by waiver from MN Softball and the ROSA Board. Players must complete the registration process prior to participating in tryouts. All evaluators are impartial and qualified volunteers made up of community members and representatives from surrounding community softball programs.

Evaluation Process

Infield: Players will be evaluated on fielding a ground ball at the short stop position hit at them straight on and off to the side. We will be looking at form/positioning, footwork, fielding, and throwing the ball to first base.

Outfield: Players will be evaluated on catching a ball to either side of them as well as behind and in front of them. We will be looking at form/positioning, footwork, fielding, and throwing the ball the cut off.

Hitting: Players will hit off of a pitching machine (10U at 45 - 46 mph & 12U at 50 - 51 mph). They will get 3 practice swings, 3 bunts, and 5 full swings. We will be looking at stance, proper swing mechanics, contact, and power.

Running: Players will get 2 timed attempts at 120-foot sprint.

Pitching and Catching: These elements are evaluated at designated times outside of the evaluation process. Players will indicate if they wish to be placed on a team based on their overall evaluation score or their pitching/catching score prior to participation in the evaluation process.

Tryout Attendance

Players are required to attend the full tryout process. Illness, injury, or personal circumstances may cause players to request an exemption from tryouts. Requests to miss tryouts must be e-mailed to the ROSA Board prior to the start of tryouts unless an injury or illness occurs during the tryouts.

Playing Up

USA Softball dictates age groupings for 8u-18u levels of play. See Resources: Age Eligibility Chart for details and to access the age calculator. If a player wishes to play up to the next level, requests must be made to the ROSA board prior to the evaluation process. Players may try out at both levels and must score in the top 6 at the higher age level in order play up for the season.
